MOGADISHU — The Somali National Army, particularly the Danab Special Forces, has conducted planned operations in the Madax-maroodi area of the Lower Shabelle region as part of ongoing efforts to secure the area and flush out Al-Shabaab militants hiding in the region.
The operations are part of a broader campaign to ensure the safety of communities and displace militant elements that have been operating in various parts of the region. The forces have been conducting operations in multiple locations across Lower Shabelle, with the goal of eliminating Al-Shabaab and restoring security and stability for civilians.
Ongoing Campaign in Lower Shabelle
Lower Shabelle has been a key focus of military operations as the government seeks to secure areas close to the capital and disrupt militant networks that have maintained a presence in the region. The Danab commandos have been actively dismantling Al-Shabaab’s illegal tax collection networks across Lower Shabelle, conducting precise counter-terrorism operations and destroying fortified hideouts and tactical checkpoints that had long hindered local economic activity.
The Danab commandos have previously conducted a planned overnight operation in the Sablaale district of Lower Shabelle, killing seven militants, including a senior commander, and destroying training facilities used for extremist indoctrination.
The commandos have also captured a senior Al-Shabaab operative responsible for coordinating bomb attacks in the Lower Shabelle region, along with two associates, during a planned operation in the Dadumaay area, describing the captured leader as a key figure in the group’s bomb-making network.
In a previous operation, Danab commandos killed nine Al-Shabaab militants, including a field commander, in the Hantiwadaag area of Lower Shabelle, destroying militant positions and recovering weapons and equipment.
Critical Note
The operations in Madax-maroodi and surrounding areas reflect the government’s continued focus on degrading Al-Shabaab’s capabilities in regions close to the capital. Lower Shabelle has long been a contested area, with the group maintaining a presence despite repeated military campaigns.
The success of these operations depends on the ability of Somali forces to secure and hold cleared areas, preventing the group’s return. Without sustained governance and development efforts, the cycle of military offensives and militant resurgence is likely to continue.
The international community’s continued support for Somali forces remains crucial to sustaining these operations. However, the long-term solution requires addressing the governance deficits and economic grievances that Al-Shabaab exploits to maintain its insurgency.
