MOGADISHU — Foreign Minister Abdisalam Ali received Chinese Ambassador to Somalia Wang Yu at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday to discuss strengthening the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
The meeting focused on the commitment of both governments to sustaining bilateral cooperation and advancing shared interests. The discussions underscored the strategic partnership that has developed between Mogadishu and Beijing, particularly following the elevation of relations to a strategic partnership level in September 2024 during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit.
Security and Defence Cooperation
Somalia and China have expanded their cooperation into security and defence, with multiple high-level engagements between officials from both countries. China has provided support to Somalia’s security forces, including assistance to the demining agency and capacity-building for personnel to reduce landmine risks.
Senior Somali security officials have completed capacity-building programmes in China under the Global Security Initiative framework, focusing on law enforcement, counterterrorism, and border security. China has awarded military scholarships to 31 officers from the Somali National Armed Forces for advanced training in Chinese military academies.
Somalia’s Minister of Internal Security recently participated in the Third China-East Africa Ministerial Dialogue on Law Enforcement and Security Cooperation, where discussions covered combating cybercrime, terrorism, and transnational threats.
Trade and Economic Ties
Economic cooperation between Somalia and China has expanded considerably. China extended its zero-tariff policy to all 53 African nations with diplomatic ties in May 2026, eliminating customs duties on 100 percent of tariff items and creating new export opportunities for Somali products.
This policy opens the Chinese market to Somali seafood, livestock, and agricultural products. The Somalia-China Business Networking Forum held in Mogadishu in August 2026 brought together more than 30 Chinese companies and investors, marking the first organized Chinese business delegation to Somalia.
Bilateral trade between the two countries is estimated at over one billion dollars. The Somali government has expressed interest in attracting Chinese investment in manufacturing, energy, and technology sectors to help address the trade imbalance and create local employment opportunities.
Humanitarian and Development Assistance
China has been a consistent source of humanitarian assistance to Somalia, delivering emergency relief during droughts and floods. The Chinese embassy has worked with the Somali Disaster Management Agency on strengthening the country’s response to climate emergencies.
Critical Note
The continued engagement between Somalia and China reflects a relationship that has deepened considerably since the elevation to strategic partnership status in 2024. China’s support for Somalia’s territorial integrity, particularly its consistent opposition to Somaliland’s separatist claims, has been a valuable diplomatic asset for Mogadishu. The economic dimension of the relationship, including zero-tariff access to Chinese markets and growing Chinese investment interest, offers tangible opportunities for Somalia’s export sectors.
Even so, the relationship carries considerations that warrant attention. Somalia’s growing economic engagement with China raises questions about the balance of influence and the need for transparency in bilateral agreements. The challenge for Mogadishu is to ensure that its partnerships deliver genuine benefits for Somali citizens, including technology transfer, job creation, and sustainable development, rather than merely shifting dependencies from one external partner to another. As Somalia navigates a complex geopolitical landscape with multiple international partners, maintaining a clear-eyed assessment of its own interests remains essential.
