KAMPALA — Somalia’s Ambassador to Uganda, Fardowsa Mohamed Qanyare, hosted Egypt’s newly appointed Ambassador to Uganda, Sharif Al-Jammal, at the Somali Embassy in Kampala for discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations and diplomatic coordination between the two countries.
The meeting was described as a courtesy visit by the Egyptian ambassador to the Somali mission. The two diplomats discussed ways to enhance cooperation and coordination between their embassies, particularly on matters of shared interest to Somalia and Egypt.
Ambassador Fardowsa and Ambassador Al-Jammal also agreed to strengthen collaboration and coordination on diplomatic positions and engagements between the two countries.
A Growing Strategic Partnership
The meeting reflects the deepening relationship between Somalia and Egypt, which has expanded significantly over the past two years. The two countries elevated their relations to a strategic partnership during President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s visit to Cairo in January 2025, and have since signed a defense agreement and a military cooperation protocol.
Egypt has consistently reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and has committed to deploying forces to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), with troops expected to be stationed in the Middle Shabelle region.
Somali and Egyptian foreign ministers have held regular consultations on shared priorities, including security cooperation, regional stability, and counterterrorism efforts. Egypt has also provided military weapons and equipment to Somalia to bolster the Somali National Army’s operational capacity.
At the Fifth Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development in October 2025, the two countries agreed to enhance cooperation across security, trade, investment, health, and sustainable development.
Critical Note
The meeting between the Somali and Egyptian ambassadors in Kampala reflects the practical dimension of the strategic partnership between Mogadishu and Cairo. Coordinating diplomatic positions and strengthening cooperation between embassies are essential for translating high-level political agreements into tangible outcomes.
Egypt’s engagement with Somalia has expanded rapidly, particularly in security and defense cooperation. The deployment of Egyptian forces to AUSSOM will mark a significant milestone in the relationship, though it also carries risks given the volatile security environment in the Middle Shabelle region. Egypt’s involvement is also closely tied to its broader regional rivalry with Ethiopia over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which adds a geopolitical dimension to its presence in Somalia.
For Somalia, the partnership with Egypt offers access to military support, training, and diplomatic backing on issues of sovereignty and territorial integrity. However, Somalia must ensure that its relationships with multiple security partners, including Turkey, Egypt, and others, are balanced and do not create new dependencies or entangle it in regional rivalries that could destabilize its own political transition.
