Somalia is about to get a new set of investors if the latest efforts by the federal government bear fruit. Investments in tourism and natural resources would be highly welcome in a country that has known nothing but chaos for decades.
“Somalia is rich in natural resources,” said Ahmed Isse Awad, Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. He was speaking during the 18th African-Nordic Foreign Affairs Meeting that took place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The meeting happened on 7th and 8th November 2019.
Currently, the country is grappling with massive challenges. Most of these are security-related with threats from Al-Qaeda and several ISIS-linked militant groups topping the list. Despite these challenges, the government’s efforts at improving its struggling economy are worth commending.
According to Awad, Somalia’s riches, especially in natural resources, could benefit the entire country. The riches are also evident in fisheries and fertile agricultural lands. With investments in all these areas, including in livestock, the country’s high unemployment rates and propensity for violence could soon end.
Without a doubt, the Africa-Nordic Foreign Ministers’ Meeting remains crucial for hosting unofficial and unbiased discussions between countries in Africa and the Nordic region.
The meeting discussed several issues. These included ways of promoting peace as well as the need for boosting investment, trade, and security. Twenty-nine African and Nordic countries, which include Finland, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, attended the meeting.
“We call on the Nordic countries to form strategic partnerships and investments with us in tourism to help our Federal Government to rebuild the country,” said the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
