Presidential candidates from opposition parties in Somalia condemned the recent threat issued by the Mayor of Mogadishu, Omar M. Filish.
This week, Mayor Filish dared the opposition to destabilize the city.
He said that anyone destabilizing the city would be arrested and beaten thoroughly.
His comments came a few days after the opposition candidates finished their consultative meeting at Jazeera Hotel in Mogadishu.
Following the meeting, the candidates chastised the Federal Government of Somalia for the shoddy and biased preparations for elections.
They demanded the immediate withdrawal of civil servants and National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) officers from electoral commissions.
On Friday, November 27, the candidates issued a statement under the banner of the Council of Candidates Union condemning Mayor Filish for the blatant threats.
The candidates said that Mayor Filish’s sentiments were a direct message from President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo.
Therefore, they asked Farmaajo to be ready to take responsibility for inciting Somalis to violence in the lead-up to the elections.
