Puntland Orders Somaliland to Stop Registering Voters in Sanaag

Puntland has ordered Somaliland to stop the voter registration exercise that is currently ongoing in Sanaag.

Somaliland and Puntland have been contesting over Sanaag.

In the last two days, elections officials from Somaliland have been registering voters in Sanaag, an exercise that has created a backlash back in Puntland.

Officials from President Said Abdullahi Deni’s administration have warned Somaliland officers against the exercise.

A statement from the Puntland administration warned that it would not hesitate to take further action against any Somaliland official caught registering voters in Sanaag.

In 2018, more than 50 people lost their lives when troops from Puntland and Somaliland clashed in Sanaag.
