Somalia Appeals to NAM for Support in Row with Ethiopia

Somalia has appealed for support from the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in its ongoing diplomatic row with Ethiopia.

The 120-member NAM is currently holding its summit in Uganda.

Delegates from 93 member countries around the world are gathered in Kampala, the Ugandan capital, for the summit.

Somalia wants NAM to intervene in its row with Ethiopia that began when the latter signed a controversial deal with Somaliland on January 1, 2024.

The deal grants Ethiopia direct access to 20kms of Somaliland’s coastline. Meanwhile, Ethiopia promises to recognize Somaliland as an independent nation.

The fallout from the deal has been immense.

Currently, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni is the NAM Chairman. He took over the chairmanship from his Azerbaijani counterpart.
