The Deputy Prime Minister has labeled Speaker Abdi Hashi Abdullahi of Somalia’s Upper House an “opposition leader” for his comments on the membership of the electoral commission.
Mahdi M. Gulaid, the Deputy Prime Minister under Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble, termed the recent remarks by Speaker Hashi as unfortunate.
Recently, Speaker Hashi criticized the move by the Federal Government of Somalia to appoint electoral commission members for Somaliland.
He accused the administration of President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo of interfering with the appointment of electoral commissioners.
Hashi stated that the commissioners should be non-partisan.
According to Hashi, it is harder for them to be impartial. In all likelihood, the commissioners could favor the government side in the upcoming polls.
Gulaid said that Speaker Hashi is “undermining the legislative power.”
