Speaker of Puntland Parliament Leaves Office in Impeachment Vote

Members of the Puntland Parliament voted to kick the assembly’s Speaker – Abdihakim Mohamed Ahmed – out of office.

Forty-nine of the assembly’s 53 members voted to eject the Speaker from office. Four of the members abstained.

Earlier, forty-four of the members submitted the motion to the regional assembly allowing it to proceed.

By the time of publishing this, the Speaker had not issued a comment.

According to the members, the Speaker was responsible for the instability that has rocked the semi-autonomous North Easter Somalia state.

On Wednesday night, after the vote, four people died from a clash pitting police officers and security guards attached to the parliament.
