More than 2.9 million Somalis are internally displaced persons (IDPs) within their own country.
That’s the message that the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced on January 17.
According to OCHA’s latest update, the conflicts and insecurities experienced in various parts of Somalia caused the displacement of over 544,000 people.
Consequently, this brought to 2.9 million the tally of IDPs in the East African nation.
As per OCHA, 2.2 million of these individuals are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance and protection.
