Over 20,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) were recorded in Somalia in the first month of 2021 alone.
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) confirmed this on February 22 through its latest newsletter.
UNHCR discovered that conflict and drought are the two factors mainly responsible for creating thousands of IDPs in January alone.
The IDPs were mostly recorded in Gedo, Bay, Lower Shabelle, Bakool, and Sanaag.
Upon arriving at IDP centers or camps, the displaced individuals needed food first followed by livelihood support, shelter, and humanitarian assistance.
