A 23-year old Somali woman made history when she was elected a council member in Maine, Minnesota.
Safiya Khalid ran for City Council membership in 2019 and emerged victorious.
She vied for the seat after expressing frustrations with the manner in which the city’s leaders managed its affairs.
During her campaigns for office, Khalid was the target of racism and trolling from different parts of the United States.
Nevertheless, she never allowed any of that to derail her unstoppable match to securing the City Council seat.
She won the seat by a landslide thus becoming not only the first Muslim but also the first Somali-American to win an elective post at the City Council.
