Somalia has launched a campaign to stop Somaliland Electoral Commission (SEC) from joining the International Electoral Commissions (A-WAB).
The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) launched the campaign on Thursday, October 20.
Somalia launched the campaign during the 5th A-WAB General Assembly and International Conference, which takes place in Cape Town, South Africa.
Halima Ismail Ibrahim, the chairperson of the Somalia National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC), made the appeal on behalf of her country.
She quoted Article 3.1 of the A-WEB Charter when addressing the meeting.
The article prohibits interference in the internal affairs of a country.
Furthermore, the NIEC chairperson stated that discussions revolving around Somaliland’s membership into A-WEB would only take place once Mogadishu and Hargeisa talks are over.
