A tragic incident involving Somali migrants traveling in their boat to the French-speaking island of Mayotte in search of greener pastures has left many in shock.
According to Madagascar’s ports authority, at least 28 Somali migrants have been confirmed dead after their boat sank near the country’s coast.
The accident involved two boats carrying 66 passengers, which had departed Somalia on November 2 with Mayotte as their destination.
Such incidents underline the risks faced by migrants navigating dangerous routes and the urgent need for international efforts to address the root causes of migration, such as poverty, conflict, and lack of opportunities in their home countries.
Rescue and support for survivors, as well as preventive measures, are crucial to mitigating these tragedies.
