More than 3.5 million people in Somalia are likely to experience severe hunger by September 2020, authorities have announced.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) confirmed that food insecurity is at record levels.
FAO said several factors are responsible for the looming crisis. The swarms of desert locusts that have invaded the country since late 2019 are one of the major causes of the crisis.
The COVID-19 pandemic has also made it harder for Somalis to grow food crops or access markets like before.
Additionally, the country is dealing with ongoing severe floods.
Consequently, FAO continues to urge international partners to step in and assist Somalia to avoid what could be a debilitating humanitarian crisis.
