3 Senior Al-Shabaab Leaders Sanctioned by UN Security Council

Three senior leaders of Al-Shabaab have been sanctioned by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

On February 26, members of the UNSC voted to sanction the three Al-Shabaab leaders.

The UNSC members voted in favor of a recent request by Somalia and the United States to have those three leaders sanctioned heavily.

UNSC confirmed that it sanctioned Maalim Ayman, Abukar Ali Adan, and Mahad Karate.

Ambassador Erica Barks-Ruggles, a representative of the US State Department, hailed the move by the UNSC.

According to Ambassador Ruggles, the three militia leaders are responsible for countless terrorist acts committed in Somalia and the Horn of Africa region.
