365 Prisoners Pardoned by President Bihi

President Musa Bihi Abdi has pardoned 365 prisoners to decongest the country’s prisons and curb the spread of COVID-19.

President Bihi made the announcement on Tuesday and said the pardon applies to inmates in prison for petty crimes.

A statement from the President’s Office said the pardon would not apply to those imprisoned over terrorism, murder, and piracy.

The announcement follows his earlier one that led to the release of 574 prisoners from Somaliland’s prisons in early April, 2020.

Bihi made the announcement as the country celebrated its 29th Anniversary since breaking free from Somalia in 1991.

Somaliland Constitution, under Article 90, gives the President powers to pardon inmates who are in jail serving time for non-serious crimes.
