700 Somalis Killed in IED Explosions in 2021, Says UN

Around 700 Somalis lost their lives when mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) exploded in 2021.

The United Nations released a report on this during this year’s Mines Awareness Day, which was celebrated on Monday, April 4.

According to the UN report, 669 Somalis died directly from IED explosions.

UN says that the number was a huge increase from the 501 reported a year ago.

The UN said that the IEDs and mines were remnants of past wars and conflicts in various parts of the East African nation.

In its report, the UN indicates that the continued presence of IEDs and mines hampers security, safety, and development in Somalia.
