Scale up Humanitarian Assistance in Somalia to Prevent Loss of Livestock, FAO Says

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has called for urgent scaling up of humanitarian assistance in Somalia to prevent the continued loss of livestock.

FAO published a report showing that Somali farmers continue to suffer huge losses of their livestock due to the ongoing drought.

In the latest report dated May 5, FAO indicates that it has provided supportive emergency treatment services to more than 11 million livestock that belong to around 275,000 Somalis.

FAO claims to have achieved this through funding from both the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Qatar Fund for Development.

Without healthy livestock, families are likely to see their young children suffer acute malnutrition, FAO said in its report.

Consequently, urgent humanitarian assistance is necessary to prevent yet another devastating famine in the East African nation.
