A Somali author of children’s books and historical fiction was honored by the state of Minnesota on Friday, September 25.
Amran Abukar, a resident of Willmar, was honored for writing books highlighting the experiences of Somali immigrants.
Abukar, a Somali refugee, was among the 10 resident immigrants of Minnesota honored for their contribution in the society.
He has written a children’s book, which he then followed up with a historical fiction title.
The immigrants were honored as part of an annual ceremony that takes place in Minnesota.
This year, organizers did not hold the actual ceremony because of the COVID-19 pandemic but announced the list of winners.
Organizers said that they plan to hold an event next year to celebrate and honor this year’s recipients.
