Abaartire Expands Reach with Borehole Rehabilitation in Qaradhi

Qaradhi, Galmudug – The Horn of Africa Groundwater for Resilience Project, locally known as Abaartire, is gaining momentum in Somalia as it continues to transform lives through access to clean and reliable water. The latest milestone in the initiative is the rehabilitation of a vital borehole in Qaradhi, a community in Cadaado District, Galmudug State.

For residents of Qaradhi, where water scarcity has long shaped daily life, the project represents more than just infrastructure—it’s a lifeline. Years of recurrent drought and degraded water systems have left many families dependent on unsafe or distant water sources. The restoration of the borehole is expected to ease these challenges, supporting both household use and small-scale farming.

The Abaartire project, jointly implemented by the Federal Ministry of Energy and Water Resources and the State Ministries, with backing from the World Bank, is part of a broader effort to strengthen Somalia’s resilience to climate shocks. By focusing on groundwater mapping, infrastructure rehabilitation, and community engagement, the initiative aims to build a sustainable water future for drought-prone regions across the country.

As work continues, communities in Galmudug and beyond are beginning to see the tangible results of long-term investment in water security. The Qaradhi borehole, once a symbol of neglect, now stands as a testament to resilience and the promise of a more stable, water-secure Somalia.
