Acting Prime Minister Inspects Mogadishu Central Prison

Mahdi M. Gulaid, the Acting Prime Minister of Somalia, visited Mogadishu Central Prison on Tuesday to inspect it.

The prison was the scene of terrible tragedy two weeks ago.

Al-Shabaab inmates tried to escape from the prison. In the process, they killed four prison guards as 15 prisoners were killed.

Following that tragedy, the Commander and the Deputy Commander of the Central Prison were relieved of their duties as investigations proceed.

Several guards were also sent home for their role in the attack.

Prison officials welcomed Prime Minister Gulaid to the facility and briefed him on the measures instituted to develop and care for prisoners.

The officials said they are working closely with prisoners to equip them with skills that could prove beneficial once they return to their communities.
