The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has warned that acute hunger could soar in Somalia and other hotspots in the coming weeks and months.
FAO stated this in its latest report.
In the report, the organization mentioned 19 “hunger hotspots” that would experience soaring acute hunger.
FAO blamed a number of factors for this worrying development.
These included weather extremes, rising conflicts, and economic instability.
It added that the instability brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and the continuing war between Russia and Ukraine is impossible to ignore.
Consequently, FAO has called for urgent humanitarian intervention.
Without that, FAO predicts that around 2 adults or 4 children in every 10,000 people would die in Somalia by December 2022.
Apart from Somalia, some of the other hunger hotspots FAO mentioned include Yemen, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Afghanistan.
