Northeastern – The regional Parliament of the newly established Northeastern State of Somalia has elected Adan Abdullahi Aw-Hassan as its inaugural Speaker, marking a key milestone in the state’s political journey. The election took place on Saturday with lawmakers casting their votes in the state’s capital.
Aw-Hassan, a seasoned political figure with years of experience in local governance, secured a majority of votes in a highly anticipated contest. His election is seen as the first major step in building the legislative framework of the young state, which was only recently formed as part of Somalia’s evolving federal system.
In his acceptance speech, Aw-Hassan pledged to work inclusively with fellow legislators and the executive to ensure stability, strengthen governance structures, and deliver services to the population. He emphasized that the new parliament must rise above clan divisions and political rivalries to serve the collective interests of the people.
“The people of Northeastern State have entrusted us with the responsibility of laying down the foundations of good governance, unity, and peace. Our work begins today, and I call upon all members of parliament to put the community’s needs above individual interests,” Aw-Hassan said.
The election was attended by traditional elders, civil society representatives, and regional officials, who described the moment as historic for the people of the northeast. Observers noted that the peaceful conduct of the vote demonstrated growing political maturity in Somalia’s federal member states.
The establishment of Northeastern State is part of broader federalization efforts under Somalia’s provisional constitution, which envisions decentralized governance as a way to promote stability and local representation. Analysts say the success of its institutions will depend on cooperation with Mogadishu and coordination with neighboring states.
With a Speaker now in place, the regional parliament is expected to move forward with electing deputy speakers and forming committees that will oversee legislative and oversight functions.
