African Union Pleased with the Outcome of the FGS-FMS Talks in Dhusamareb

The African Union (AU) has expressed its pleasure with the outcome of the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Federal Member States (FMS) talks in Dhusamareb.

Two days ago, news emerged from Dhusamareb showing that the leaders attending the meeting had reached a consensus on the upcoming elections.

AU has thrown its weight behind the decision by the leaders to form a technical committee to look into election modalities.

Somalia is scheduled to hold elections in late 2020 and early 2021.

The country will hold national polls in November 2020 before proceeding with presidential elections in  February 2021.

In late June, the Chairperson of the National Independent Elections Commission (NIEC) told parliament that the country would be unable to hold timely elections.

However, leaders including Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire and all the five regional leaders, insisted that the country must hold its elections as earlier planned.

All the leaders met at Dhusamareb for two weeks to iron out their differences and agree on a common plan.

AU commends this move and says it heralds broad consensus building and charts a common vision that all leaders in Somalia share for the country.
