African Union to Continue Supporting Somalia While Drawing its Troops Down

The African Union has said that it will not stop supporting Somalia even as it plans to reduce the number of its troops in the Horn of Africa nation.

AU has promised to support the country’s peace and security endeavors.

Somalia has suffered decades of civil war and dysfunctional government. It has embarked on a path that should lead to more stability.

Smail Chergui, the AU Commissioner for Peace and Security said, “AU will continue extending its unwavering support to help facilitate the goals of Somalia Transition Plan.”

Commissioner Chergui issued these remarks during AMISOM Operations Coordination Committee’s latest meeting.

AMISOM has vowed to exit Somalia in 2021. In the meantime, it will be training security forces in the country and guide the transition process.
