AFRICOM Carries out a Drone Attack in Southern Somalia

The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) carried out a drone attack in southern Somalia on December 24.

AFRICOM launched the attack in conjunction with Somali National Army (SNA) troops.

The attack targeted a compound just outside Saakow that reportedly hosts militia from Al-Shabaab.

According to a preliminary report and analysis from AFRICOM, the latest airstrike destroyed several buildings and facilities in the compound.

Further, many Al-Shabaab fighters fled from the compound.

The initial assessment indicates that no civilian was either injured or killed in Thursday’s drone attack.

Heidi Berg, a US Navy Rear Admiral, said that AFRICOM would continue to monitor all threats to countries in the East African region.

Admiral Berg also serves as AFRICOM’s Director of Intelligence.
