General Stephen Townsend, the Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), has held discussions with the newly-elected President of Somalia.
Gen. Townsend met with President-Elect Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Mogadishu on Saturday, May 21.
The AFRICOM Commander congratulated Mohamud on his recent electoral victory in the presidential elections held on May 15.
He also extended his congratulatory messages to the people of Somalia, the government, and all stakeholders who worked hard to make the elections a success.
They were in the company of the US Ambassador to Somalia Larry Andre Jr.
During their discussions, the leaders agreed to pursue close cooperation between AFRICOM and security forces in Somalia to ensure that the country enjoys increased peace and security.
Specifically, Gen. Townsend promised President-Elect Mohamud that AFRICOM would work closely with Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF).
