AFRICOM Conducts 50th Drone Attack against Al-Shabaab in Somalia

United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) carried out the 50th drone attack against Al-Shabaab militants in Somalia.

AFRICOM conducted the airstrike on December 10.

This week’s attack targeted explosive experts working for the Al-Qaeda linked group. AFRICOM called the attack successful.

The attack was the 50th by AFRICOM in 2020 alone.

According to an initial statement by AFRICOM, eight Al-Shabaab fighters were killed in the Thursday attack.

Col. Chris Karns, the AFRICOM spokesperson, confirmed the incident during an interview with local media.

The 2020 airstrikes are fewer than those carried out in 2019 when AFRICOM conducted 63 drone attacks in the East African nation.

However, this year’s attacks exceed 2018 and 2017 figures when the United States military conducted 47 and 35 airstrikes respectively.
