The United States confirmed it conducted an airstrike on December 24, 2024, that killed Mohamed Mire (also known as Abu Abdirahman).
Mire, who is a senior leader of Al-Shabaab, was killed by the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) in coordination with the Somali government.
Mire had served as Al-Shabaab’s interior minister and was a key decision-maker in the group for 15 years.
Designated a global terrorist by the U.S. State Department on October 17, 2022, Mire’s death is seen as a significant blow to Al-Shabaab’s operations.
The U.S. Africa Command stated no civilians were harmed in the operation, which occurred approximately 10 kilometers southwest of Quyno Barrow in Somalia’s Middle Juba region.
