AFRICOM Launches First Drone Attack against Al-Shabaab During Ramadan

The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) launched the first drone attack against Al-Shabaab since the start of Ramadan.

The attack, which was jointly conducted between AFRICOM and the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), took place just outside Kunyo Barrow.

Further, it comes barely a month since AFRICOM published its first ever report on civilian casualties arising out of its drone attacks against the Al-Qaeda linked group in Somalia.

Human rights organizations had constantly accused AFRICOM of killing and injuring dozens of civilians with its airstrikes.

AFRICOM confirmed its latest attack in a statement issued on Monday. In the statement, the organization indicated that it had killed two AL-Shabaab militants.

Furthermore, the statement also said, “AFRICOM confirms killing two Al-Shabaab militants in Monday’s drone attack. No civilian were either killed or injured in the operation.”

FGS has been a huge supporter of the drone attacks, which it cites for their effectiveness in weeding out Al-Shabaab adherents in the region.
