The United States African Command (AFRICOM) is interested in pursuing close cooperation with Somaliland.
The news emerged following the decision by General Stephen Townsend, the AFRICOM Commander, to visit Somaliland on May 12.
General Townsend held discussions with senior officials from the Somaliland government.
Among those he met were President Muse Bihi Abdi and his cabinet ministers.
The AFRICOM officials expressed their hope that Somaliland would continue playing its role as a peaceful, stable, and resilient democracy in the Horn of Africa region.
Furthermore, the AFRICOM officials pledged their commitment to continue exploring more opportunities for strengthening cooperation with Somaliland.
Specifically, they expressed interest in pursuing shared objectives in areas such as the fight against terrorism, trafficking, and piracy.
