The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) denied reports circulating in the media that it lost any of its soldiers in the latest drone attack against Al-Shabaab in Somalia.
Al-Shabaab declared that several AFRICOM soldiers were injured in Monday’s airstrike.
On August 24, AFRICOM conducted an airstrike against Al-Shabaab militants holed up in Dar as Salam after the extremists attacked its officers from a nearby building.
During the airstrike, AFRICOM killed six Al-Shabaab extremists while injuring three others.
According to AFRICOM, its forces were in the area to support a military operation by Somali National Army (SNA) soldiers.
AFRICOM later issued a statement denying reports of casualties from media outlets sympathetic to the Al-Qaeda linked group.
Col. Chris Karns, AFRICOM’s Director of Public Affairs, said that the militia group has a history of “using propaganda to control the local populace.”
Monday’s attack was the latest airstrike AFRICOM has carried out against Al-Shabaab in 2020.
