AFRICOM Says No Soldier Was Killed in Al-Shabaab Attack

The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has denied reports that its soldiers were killed during a Monday morning attack by Al-Shabaab in Somalia.

Yesterday, Al-Shabaab militia carried out a deadly attack in Jubbaland.

Some of AFRICOM troops are based in the town that is 50kms away from Jubbaland’s administrative capital of Kismayo.

Al-Shabaab released a statement through some of its proxy media outlets stating that it killed 16 people in yesterday’s attack.

According to the media outlets, four of the 16 dead individuals were AFRICOM servicemen.

Specifically, Al-Shabaab told the media that it killed members of the highly trained Danab Special Forces.

However, AFRICOM’s spokesperson, Col. Chris Karns, denied Al-Shabaab’s reports.

Col. Karns clarified that none of the AFRICOM soldiers was killed during the attack. Instead, he said that only one serviceman was injured.

He mentioned that the injured soldier is in a stable condition in hospital where he is currently recuperating.
