The United States Command in Africa (AFRICOM) says that COVID-19 has not changed the threat of terror in 2020.
The organization said that countries in East Africa remain vulnerable to terror and extremist groups despite COVID-19 affecting normalcy around the globe.
Maj. Gen. Dagvin R. M. Anderson, AFRICOM’s Head of Special Operations, asked nations in the region to remain “vigilant, resilient, patient, and willing to confront terrorism.”
He indicated that the militias are as committed as ever in identifying opportunities that the pandemic presents to go ahead with their missions.
Anderson made these revelations during a virtual press conference he gave on Tuesday.
He noted that one of its partners in the war against terror in the region, African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), had halted its activities to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, Maj. Gen. Anderson mentioned that the organizations, together with Somali National Army (SNA), have resumed their fight against groups such as Al-Shabaab and ISIS.
