Airstrikes Near Mogadishu Strike Al-Shabaab Positions

AFGOYE, Somalia – At least 12 Al-Shabaab militants died in Afgoye, the vital supply route in Somalia, demonstrating commitment and strength in battling the group, which dominates rural, central, and southern areas.

The Somali government announced that 12 Al-Shabaab fighters were eliminated during an operation last night near Jambalul, close to Afgoye town. Situated north of Mogadishu, the town frequently experiences attacks from Al-Shabaab.

The operation targeted bunkers the militants were constructing, but it escalated into an intense confrontation. The militants launched mortars, causing civilian casualties, and two security personnel were also wounded.

Meanwhile, the Somali government reported a potential airstrike near Jilib, an Al-Shabaab-controlled town, targeting senior militant figures on Wednesday evening. Intelligence authorities indicated that more information about the operation will be released shortly.

This development occurs as Jubbaland regional forces and the Somali National Army (SNA) advance on Al-Shabaab positions within the Jilib corridor, commonly used by the fighters. The town is located in Middle Jubba, within Jubbaland.

Recent security operations captured Jamaame in Lower Shabelle, creating a path for the final assault on militants in Jilib. The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) is supporting local forces with air support.

Elsewhere, Somali National Army (SNA) forces prevented a suicide attack at General Dhagabadan Camp in Mogadishu, one of the army’s training facilities in Somalia.

The army command confirmed that alert soldiers shot a suicide bomber attempting to enter the camp’s entrance on Wednesday. The explosion injured several guards. The SNA verified that the area is now secure and normal operations have resumed.
