Earlier on Sunday, reports emerged that Al-Shabaab militants had abducted a local lawmaker in Bal’ad, which is 30kms away from the Somalia capital of Mogadishu.
Initially, security forces thought they were only dealing with a case of kidnap.
However, it has since been confirmed that members of the Al-Qaeda linked group not only abducted, but also killed the lawmaker.
The lawmaker, who was identified as Mohamed Mohamud Siyad, had been traveling in a public minivan from Jowhar to Mogadishu.
When the vehicle reached Gololey, Al-Shabaab extremists stopped it and commandeered it before driving off.
According to security authorities, Siyad was then murdered a few moments after being kidnapped. However, the militia first removed him from the minivan.
Al-Shabaab has since claimed responsibility for the brutal murder of the lawmaker.
