Al-Shabaab Ambushes Ethiopian Forces in Gedo after Crossing into Somalia

On Friday, Al-Shabaab fighters ambushed Ethiopian forces that had crossed into Somalia. The attack took place in Gedo.

A fight between the two groups then ensued in the outskirts of Luuq Town.

Authorities say the attack seemed to target a convoy comprising troops from the Ethiopia National Defense Forces (ENDF).

Al-Shabaab militants hurled several explosives at the ENDF convoy. The Ethiopian troops have been patrolling the region that has endured weeks of violence meted by the militia.

Gedo has witnessed an increase in insecurity following the prolonged differences between Somali National Army (SNA) and members of Jubaland’s regional troops.

AMISOM has also witnessed the tension in its ranks. Its troops are not enjoying the same level of cooperation with SNA as before.

A source revealed that the militants seem more interested in attacking non-AMISOM Ethiopia forces. FGS and Jubaland have been unhappy with the presence of the Ethiopian forces in Gedo.
