Al-Shabaab militants fired mortar shells at a military base in Beledweyne that is manned by Djibouti’s AMISOM contingent.
Eyewitness reports indicate that the shells never landed at their targets though that never stopped the peacekeepers from responding with their own heavy artillery.
AMISOM officials are yet to respond or comment on the incident.
However, no information on casualties is forthcoming.
A recent joint operation between AMISOM troops and Somali National Army (SNA) in the region led to the recapture of key towns in the strategic Lower Shabelle region.
Some of the strategic towns recently recaptured in the operation include Barire, Awdhegle, Anole, El Salini, and Janale.
