Al-Shabaab Attacks Mandera Town and Kill One Kenyan Soldier

Al-Shabaab carried out an attack in Kenya’s Mandera Town on Sunday morning.

The militants killed a Kenyan soldier during the raid along the northeastern part of the country, authorities have confirmed.

In an interview with members of the press, Laffey Deputy County Commissioner John Marete said that at least 10 heavily armed militants attacked Mandera at 3am local time.

A deadly gunfight ensued, which led to the killing of the security officer. Marete confirmed that the gunfight lasted no more than two minutes.

The dead officer was identified as a member of the National Police Reservists (NPR).

Marete said that the deadly exchange of fire occurred at Warankara Township within Mandera Town.

The NPR officer died on the spot before security officers repulsed Al-Shabaab fighters.
