Al-Shabaab carried out a daring attack on Afrik Hotel in Mogadishu on January 31.
The attack took place at an establishment that is next to Aden Adde International Airport, a heavily fortified facility in the nation’s capital.
Reports from witnesses and authorities indicate that the extremists detonated an explosive device on the hotel before forcing their way inside.
Afterward, they started shooting at the people inside the hotel randomly.
The incident took place late on Sunday evening.
Heavy gunfight was also reported between the militants and security forces who responded immediately to the attack.
Several prominent Somalis were rescued from the hotel.
These included Yusuf Mohamed Indha Adde, a former State Minister of Defense, and Mohamed Nur Galal, a former military commander.
Hussein Goley, who owns Afrik Hotel, was also among the group of people rescued from the deadly attack.
Nevertheless, the number of casualties – including those injured in the attack – remains unknown.
