Al-Shabaab Kills Two Humanitarian Workers in Mogadishu

Al-Shabaab militants reportedly killed two humanitarian workers in Mogadishu on Tuesday, October 27.

According to security authorities, the workers were part of the team comprising health workers that is currently involved in the ongoing polio campaign in the region.

The killing has been roundly condemned since it comes at a time when Somalia is experiencing an outbreak of polio cases.

Recently, Ministry of Health officials working in conjunction with World Health Organization (WHO), and United Nations Children’s Funds (UNICEF) staff said 23 children had been infected and diagnosed with polio.

Southern and central parts of the country are the most affected.

Since then, a campaign involving humanitarian and health workers has been launched to immunize 1.65 million children aged five years or below.

Around 500,000 children are in Mogadishu alone.

The identities of the humanitarian workers killed by extremists in the capital city have not been released, though.
