Al-Shabaab Leaves a Somali Town Amid Reports of an Impending Military Operation

Al-Shabaab fighters have fled a town in Somalia as reports of an impending operation by the military increase.

Reports indicate that African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), US African Command (AFRICOM), and Somali National Army (SNA) are planning a joint military operation.

The operation, which would mostly be in central Somalia, has left the militants with no option than to flee from Elbur town in Galgadud, Galmudug State.

In the last few days, SNA forces have teamed up with a contingent from the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) to launch military raids in the region.

SNA and ENDF soldiers have already arrived at the town with their heavily armored vehicles.

Consequently, the extremists have fled into nearby towns, villages, and thickets to avoid attracting the wrath of the military.

Al-Shabaab militants have been in control of the town for the last decade.

Multiple sources have mentioned that Al-Shabaab relied on Elbur town for a huge percentage of its revenues. The town is the latest to be liberated from the extremists.
