Al-Shabaab suffered heavy casualties as soldiers from the Somali National Army (SNA) launched a military operation in Lower Shabelle on April 3.
Reports from the region indicate that Al-Shabaab militants had attacked several local army bases.
However, SNA soldiers rebuffed and foiled these attacks.
As the two sides engaged in intense gunfight, more militants lost their lives when they were shot.
Somali army chief, Brig. Gen. Odowaa Yusuf Rageh, confirmed the incident to members of the press on Saturday morning.
In his statement, Brig. Gen. Rageh stated that the army inflicted “heavy casualties” on the militants in Lower Shabelle.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that Somalis live in a secure, peaceful, and safe nation.
