Ambassador Fender Urges Somalia to Base Elections on September 17 Agreement

Ben Fender, the United Kingdom Ambassador to Somalia, urged the East African nation to base its upcoming elections on the agreement signed on September 17, 2020.

Ambassador Fender spoke on the basis of the statement issued by international partners on the elections impasse in Somalia.

International partners issued a press statement dated February 8.

In it, they “welcomed the efforts by political leaders in Somalia to find an agreement that enables them to implement the September 17 deal.”

Fender said that Somalia should hold elections soon.

Secondly, it would be preferable to have the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Federal Member States (FMS) fully on board the implementation of the previous deal.

In Ambassador Fender’s view, holding elections soon on the basis of the September 17, 2020 agreement is Somalia’s “most realistic way forward.”

He also commended leaders for taking part in the Dhusamareb IV talks, which ran from February 1-4.

Fender reminded the political leadership that consensus is now within reach; hence, the need for holding another round of talks soon.
