Americo Takes Helm at Mogadishu Port, Pledges Service Improvements

Mogadishu, Somalia – Somalia’s Ministry of Ports and Marine Transport on Thursday formally appointed Ambassador Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, widely known as Americo, as the new manager of Mogadishu Port, succeeding Ahmed Mohamed Mohamud Washington.

The handover ceremony, held at the port premises, was presided over by Minister of Ports and Marine Transport Abdullahi Mohamed Nur. Senior government officials, port employees, and representatives from the business community attended the event.

In his inaugural remarks, Americo underlined the strategic importance of Mogadishu Port to Somalia’s economic recovery and growth. He pledged to focus on modernizing operations, strengthening transparency, and improving efficiency to meet both national and international trade demands.

“Mogadishu Port is the lifeline of Somalia’s economy. Our goal is to expand services, ensure accountability, and create an environment that encourages investment and trade,” Americo said.

Outgoing manager Ahmed Mohamed Mohamud Washington was commended for his tenure, with officials highlighting his contributions to stabilizing operations during a period of significant challenges, including security risks and global trade disruptions.

Mogadishu Port, one of Somalia’s busiest commercial hubs, handles the majority of the country’s imports and exports. The government has prioritized its development as part of wider efforts to boost domestic revenue and reduce reliance on foreign aid.

The new leadership transition comes at a time when Somalia is seeking to strengthen port management and enhance the logistics sector, positioning the country as a competitive player in the Horn of Africa’s maritime trade.
