AMISOM Admits to Killing 7 Civilians in Golweyn

African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) admitted that its forces killed seven civilians in Golweyn earlier this month.

AMISOM had promised to investigate the incident after local leaders said that the dead were not members of Al-Shabaab but innocent civilians.

This contradicted a report by AMISOM stating that the dead were militants who had laid an ambush against them.

On August 21, AMISOM issued a press release admitting that the dead were civilians.

It also indicated that investigations into how the AMISOM troops “were responsible for the death of the seven civilians” would continue.

Furthermore, the organization announced the formation of a seven-member Board of Inquiry (BOI) to commence work on this sad incident.

A senior officer leads the BOI. The African Union Commission (AUC) in Addis Ababa has also assigned two of its personnel to join the BOI.

The BOI will work closely with the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) officers on this matter.
