On Tuesday, officials representing African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) met at Villa Somalia in Mogadishu.
Francisco Madeira was at the meeting on behalf of AMISOM while Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu and Dr. Mohamed Ali Guyo represented IGAD.
Dr. Gebeyehu is IGAD’s Executive Secretary while Dr. Guyo serves as the organization’s Special Envoy for the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Somalia. Madeira heads AMISOM.
During their meeting, the three officials discussed the progress the country made to restore peace and security in the Horn of Africa nation.
Madeira said AMISOM was grateful for the role IGAD had played in maintaining peace in the whole region.
Furthermore, he said the continent had to work together to achieve AU’s goal of maintaining peace and security throughout Africa.
President Farmaajo also met with Dr. Gebeyehu to reassure him and IGAD of Somalia’s continued support towards the regional body.
During the meeting, Farmaajo asked IGAD not to stop the reforms needed to ensure the regional body continues playing a critical role in the region’s strategic affairs.
