The Commander of the Sector One unit of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) visited frontline battle groups on October 21.
Brig. Gen. Richard Otto made the routine visit to assess the progress being made by the Sector One unit in the fight against Al-Shabaab.
Several senior AMISOM commanders and officers accompanied Brig. Gen. Otto in his tour.
Brig. Gen. Otto and his team mostly concentrated on AMISOM’s Forward Operation Bases controlled by the Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF).
The Ugandan contingent of AMISOM mostly operates from Middle Juba, Lower Shabelle, and Banadir regions.
Their mandate mostly revolves around securing main supply routes while protecting civilians and key installations.
During his visit, Brig. Gen. Otto expressed delight at the level of preparedness he had witnessed in the UPDF soldiers.
He also commended the troops for neutralizing the Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) that the enemy had planted along main supply routes.
Brig. Gen. Otto urged the troops to be ready to offer any support needed by government troops to ensure that Somalia holds peaceful, secure, and successful elections.
