AMISOM Confirms Sentencing to Death of Two Ugandan Soldiers

The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has confirmed that two Ugandan soldiers have been sentenced to death.

The soldiers were found guilty of killing several Somali civilians in August 2021.

Three other soldiers were sentenced to a prison term of 39 years each for their role in the deaths of the civilians.

AMISOM published a statement indicating that the three soldiers would be repatriated to Uganda to serve their prison term.

Brigadier General Don Nabasa, Commander of the Ugandan People Defense Force Contingent and AMISOM Sector 1 unit, spoke on behalf of the organization.

“Our sole responsibility is protection of lives and property,” Brig. Gen. Nabasa stated.

He added that AMISOM troops were in Somalia to degrade Al-Shabaab and any other armed militia group.

Meanwhile, Francisco Madeira, the Head of AMISOM, expressed gratitude to Ugandan government for cooperating with AMISOM and Somalia to prosecute the matter.

He expressed deep regrets at the deaths of the Somali civilians.

Ambassador Madeira condoled with the families and friends of the civilians who lost their lives during the regrettable incident.
